Health Services Updates for April 26, 2023 – COVID Protocols and Staffing for 23-24
All Grades

Principal Bulletin Action RequiredDeadline: June 16, 2023

As shared in the March principal’s bulletin, in alignment with recent California Department of Public Health guidance and shifts in resources, the SCUSD Covid Health & Safety plan has been updated. Covid testing is now shifting to providing over-the counter (OTC) tests, which are taken by the individual or their parent/caregiver.

Please note and share widely with staff that due to CDPH laboratory credentialing requirements school staff may not administer, read, or interpret a student’s  OTC Covid test.

With the shift to OTC testing, the Care Room Health Aide positions will be ending this 22-23 school year. As COVID Health Aides leave between now and the end of the year, these positions will no longer be backfilled.  Caring for sick and injured students will shift back to office management. We encourage school teams to plan for this shift now, as the end of the school year approaches.

A Health Aide Lead will make a site visit to walk your office staff through the guidance for managing individuals with Covid symptoms and what flyers & test kits to send home with a sick individual. A Health Aide Lead will remain as a Covid resource for you into the 23-24 school year and will ensure your school site remains stocked with OTC Covid test kits while they remain available through CDPH. Please print and keep accessible this Guidance for Sending Sick Students/Staff Home.

Your school nurse will remain as a resource for you to consult with about health concerns or health emergencies that arise. They will provide training on emergency medications and procedures per school district policies. Given their many duties, in general school nurses are not able to provide first aid and routine care of ill and injured students while at the school campus.

Some staff positions require CPR and First Aid Certification, however we encourage all school staff to enroll in the district’s CPR and First Aid Certification classes.  You may find more information about these free courses here – /post/2022-2023-blended-learning-cpraedfirst-aid-training
