Soon-to-be-closed school hosts ‘Legacy Day’ for community
Alumni of Freeport Elementary are invited to share memories and more at Saturday’s event

Press release

June 7, 2012 (鶹Ƶ):  Since its opening in 1954, Freeport Elementary School has prepared generations of South 鶹Ƶ children for success in school and life.

As the neighborhood aged and children grew up and moved away, however, the school struggled to keep up its enrollment. Due to the dwindling number of students, the 鶹Ƶ City Unified School District’s Board of Trustees voted to close the campus next fall.

Before the doors close a final time, and to celebrate the school’s 58-year history, staff is hosting a “Legacy Day” on Saturday with a memory wall, carnival games, arts and crafts and more. Current Freeport families and alumni are invited to attend and share stories.

“We want to honor all that this school has meant to this community over the decades,” said Principal Amy Whitten. “For so many people, Freeport was the place that life-long friendships were formed and scholastic careers launched.”

Neighbor Rose Earp, whose children and grandchildren attended Freeport – and whose great-grandchildren currently go to the school – said the campus has served as a safe haven for community kids. “It’s been there for so many years and so many kids have gone there,” she said. “I wish it would stay open.”

Most Freeport students will attend John Still K-8 School in September.
