School Hosts Early Morning ‘Read and Feed’ to Push Family Literacy
Event at John Sloat Elementary School TOMORROW aimed at encouraging parents to read with children

Press release

The family that reads together succeeds together.
That’s the message John Sloat Elementary School hopes to get across tomorrow with its first annual “Read and Feed,” an early morning snack-and-a-book event for parents and children.

“Read and Feed” begins at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow (Wednesday, October 19) in the John Sloat Elementary School cafeteria, 7525 Candlewood Way. Media must check in with the school office on arrival.

“Parents can help their children learn to love books and become better readers by being good reading role models,” says John Sloat Principal Angela Novotny. “Reading is an important key to success in school and life.
“As Dr. Seuss wrote, ‘The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go!’ ”

Studies show that students with the best literacy skills perform the best in school and enjoy school more. Because literacy is critical to academic success, the 鶹Ƶ City Unified School District has made improving reading and writing skills a goal for all schools.
