Leataata Floyd School to honor volunteer with Community Service Award
Nancy Tennyson of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral to receive plaque from school鈥檚 namesake

Press release

May 31, 2013 (麻豆视频):  Leataata Floyd Elementary School will honor Trinity Episcopal Cathedral Outreach Director Nancy Tennyson with the first-ever Leataata Floyd Community School Service Award at a celebration on Tuesday (June 4).

Tennyson has been instrumental in creating and leading a partnership between Trinity Cathedral and the school. Over the past decade, Tennyson helped start the school鈥檚 Clothes Closet and Weekend Snack Packet program, which provides nutritious food for students. Tennyson and the church have also provided Mother鈥檚 Day gifts for students to give their moms, holiday gifts for students and luncheons for teachers.

鈥淗er service is truly sincere and selfless,鈥 says Leataata Floyd Principal Billy Aydlett. 鈥淪he was the obvious first choice to be the first recipient of the Leataata Floyd Community Service Award.鈥
Tennyson will receive her award from the school鈥檚 namesake, a Seavey Circle resident who serves as a community activist and neighborhood leader. Floyd also teaches Polynesian dancing to students after school. Other presenters at the event include 麻豆视频 City Councilman Steve Hansen and Larry Herschfield, founder of Ranch Capital.

Recognizing the importance of community service is one of the ways Leataata Floyd is helping its students master social awareness skills, said Aydlett. Social awareness is one of five social and emotional learning competencies researchers have found vital to success in school and life. Leataata Floyd is one of four SCUSD schools piloting a Social and Emotional Learning initiative funded by the NoVo Foundation.
