First day of school to feature Senate pro Tem Steinberg, ‘green’ classrooms
Supervisor Serna and Superintendent Raymond will also speak at ‘鶹Ƶ Goes Back to School’ event
August 30, 2012 (鶹Ƶ): Senate pro Tem Darrell Steinberg will speak Tuesday morning (September 4) at SCUSD’s first day of school celebration, held this year at Phoebe Hearst Elementary School to highlight the campus’ new “green” classrooms.
Other VIP guests scheduled to speak at “鶹Ƶ Goes Back to
School” include 鶹Ƶ County Supervisor Phil Serna,
鶹Ƶ City Unified School District Superintendent Jonathan
Raymond and SCUSD Board of Education Vice President Jeff
Cuneo.
A premiere school serving East 鶹Ƶ, Phoebe Hearst added
kindergarten to its c
lassroom lineup this fall. To accommodate the extra students, SCUSD “repurposed” and renovated a portable building with “green” features, including solar tubes, dual-pane windows and a high-tech, energy efficient heating and cooling system.
Funding for the Phoebe Hearst project came from Measure 1, a 2002
bond initiative that has been depleted over the years. Two
measures on the November ballot – Measures Q and R – would allow
SCUSD to implement much-needed maintenance projects and
money-saving green upgrades throughout the district.
